Tempelman was one of the most important Nordic architects in the era of Gustav III, the late 17th and early 18th centuries. He built numerous pavilions at the Drottningholm palace as well as still extant town houses, and this survey builds on previously unpublished Tempelman drawings from the Hermitage in St Petersburg. His work is set against a background of 18th century cultural politics and royal commissions; Tempelman was the first Professor of Architecture in Sweden and as such a key figure in the development of the neoclassical aesthetic in Europe.

No architect has played as important a role in Swedish history! He has designed palaces, churches and gardens for princes and nobles in Sweden and abroad. This book consists of eight chapters which describe Tessin as an architect, landscape gardener, politician, traveller, collector and writer. A concluding chapter outlines the importance of Tessin for architects and town-planners up until today. John Kimmich’s architectural photographs provide a suite of pictorial interpretations of Tessin’s architecture.

Nicodemus Tessin the Younger was one of the great European architects of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. His whole career, however, was limited to his native country Sweden. This edition of the catalogue of his collection, the first edition of a grand series entitled “Catalogue des Livres, Estampes & Desseins,” intends to finally introduce Tessin to a foreign public. Following an interfoliated, facsimile of the catalogue, this edition also includes extracts of Tessin’s letters to his son, expressing his wishes for later collections.
