The City of Copenhagen has granted some 520 awards to buildings and other projects over the past 100 years. The overall picture that is described here can be read both as a history of architecture and as a history of mentality. A history of architecture because at least in the first half of this period, Copenhagen had the greatest concentration of historically valuable architecture, and a history of mentality because the selection at any given time reflects the attitudes and views that dominate among politicians and architects, and because the selection shows what projects are considered at any given time to be most important, for example housing, schools, and other institutions.

Bayt Al-‘Aqqad is one of 23 buildings that is part of the UNESCO World Heritage programme in old Damascus. This book takes a comprehensive look at the restoration that took place on the building when the Danish Institute in Damascus took over the house in 1997. This process revealed not only how beautiful the house was but that it contains fine examples of the most important periods of the exterior and the interior architectural history of Damascus. Beautiful tile and marble work, murals and plans and elevations are included. In the back of the book are fold-out plans of the building.

As an architect, museum director, and restorer, Bjerknes built a number of homes near Bergen, Norway that were the among the best designs from the war years. He also set about restoring stave churches, and he was responsible for rebuilding Old Town Bergen. Bjerknes was clearly inspired by the wild nature and unique building styles of Western Norway, but he combined this with his penchant for functionality. Includes a list of commissions.

Blomstedt’s all too short career displayed his great ties to functionalism, but his work also reveals elements of mannerism, expressionism, and rationalism. He reached his peak from about 1924-35, a time of searching for a new style and the re-evaluation of old world forms. Blomstedt is most famous for his design of the Tampere Railway Station, but he also designed churches, factories, hotels, banks, office buildings, and housing complexes, many of which are featured in this book.
