In the preparations for the 100th anniversary of Jorn’s birth in 2014, the work of James Ensor was more or less a sine qua non. The strong artistic connection between the two artists achieved two objectives simulatneously: the reintroduction of one of the great European painters whose paintings had never been widely exhibited in Denmark, and the chance to experience Jorn’s pictures in the light of one of the most influential artists. In addition to a voluminous display of Jorn’s work, represented in this book is a collection of more than 25 Ensor paintings and an even greaternumber of drawings and graphic prints, loaned to Museum Jorn by a great number of individuals and institutions for the exhibition. Lushly illustrated and deeply documented, including text from experts in the field.

Eyes stare unmoving out into space. Not fixing us, the picture’s viewers, but directly their slightly off-centre gaze towards something else. Almost catatonically blank, the doll’s-eye sidelong gaze which stares out of the picture is a recurrent motif in Julie Nord’s work. Bordered by decoration comprised of fungi, unruly flowers, butterflies and wormy skulls. The work is a species of paraphrase that draws on Lewis Carrol’s Victorian classic Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland from 1865, in which fantastical but wide-awake metamorphoses provide the main theme. Born in 1970, this artist who lives in Copenhagen.

In 2012, Jesper Just was selected by the Danish Arts Council and given the prestigious task of representing Denmark at the 55th Venice Biennale in 2013. His appointment seemed self-evident. Nationally and especially internationally- Just spellbinds his surroundings with enigmatic, ambiguous narratives in the form of moving pictures of an uncompromisingly high quality. He is captivated by themes such as human relations, desire, and places-exploring them without words, through music, song, and poetic filmic narratives. Just makes use of the readily identifiable codes and idioms of Hollywood movies while also challenging us by twisting the familiar movie cliches, leaving us with questions rather than providing answers. This book presents the exhibition inspired by and following his work for the Biennale. It shows his major work interacting with films dating from 2002 to the present.
