During its more than 700 years of existence, Koldinghus Castle-the last royal castle in Jutland -has played an important part in the history of Denmark: as a frontier defense, as a royal residence and as the seat of the local state administration. Since a disastrous fire in 1808, the castle has attracted much attention. Today, it is a museum of cultural history and a home of cultural activities. With stark illustrations, this lovely guide provides a wonderful introduction to the history of this castle, and to its main collections of Danish handicrafts and applied art from the Renaissance to the 1950s.

The Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden was founded in the 1820s with the motto “Science and Art” which, at the time, were considered the foundation for the progress of mankind. The motto’s message still survives strongly today, as the building of the Institute itself was completed with this message in mind. The buildings contain close to 150 works of art by some of the leading Swedish artists at the time, such as Carl Milles and Georg Pauli, for example. This book offers a presentation of these works, descriptions of the ideas and influences underlying them, as well as a brief account of the Institute’s history.

The Korsmo House, 1955, is an icon of modern Scandinavian architecture, an experimental house that has been frequently published in magazines and architecture anthologies. A few years ago a jury elected the house as one of the ten most significant buildings in Norwegian twentieth century architecture. Planetveien 12 discusses the location of this architectural icon, its many incarnations, the biographies of the architect and the Korsmo couple's visit to America where they met Hugo Weber, Mies van der Rohe, Frank Lloyd Wright, Alexander Calder and, significantly, Ray and Charles Eames. The book also details Korsmo's other projects and his teaching career, alongside detailed plans from inception and a full photographic essay about the finished house. The author, Elisabeth Tostrup, is an architect and professor at the Oslo School of Architecture.

In 1990, the Museum of Architecture in Sweden asked 40 women architects, who worked with/ designed houses, city plans, research, landscape, or interior design, to designate their “best” projects for this exhibition. Included are the writings and black and white photography of works by all 40 architects in their attempts to describe themselves, their lives, and their “best” work. Because of this personal approach, this catalog is an invaluable resource which effectively reveals the thoughts and works of pioneering Swedish female architects all from this century with an emphasis on modernism.

This book is the catalogue for an exhibition at the School of Architecture in Aarhus, Denmark and a part of a larger cultural exchange programme between Asia and Denmark, called “Images of Asia.” It is showing 20 architectural projects on the central part of Kyoto, the old housing area, which the last 50 years has become more and more intruded by commercial interests and thereby lost its public spaces to a.o. car-parking.
