Described as one of the world’s most perfect works of architecture, the Palace of Christian VII forms part of a unique architectural solution consisting of four identical mansions surrounding a square. Here, the work of architect Nicolai Eigtved (1701-1754) reached its culmination. With his richly varied yet carefully controlled style, Eigtved was among the foremost representatives of the Rococo in European architecture. The palace was built for the lord high chamberlain Adam Gottlob Moltke who demanded several refinements that helped make the mansion the most impressive private residence in Denmark. Gorgeously illustrated and comprehensive, these books share a detailed account of the process of building and furnishing the mansion in the 1700s, as well as presenting all later changes, concluding with the recent restoration and redecoration. Amalienborg is the official residence of the Danish Royal Family.

This book is about Hilding Ekelund who was a central figure in Finnish architecture for about six decades, from the classicism of the 1920’s to the late interpretations of modernism of the 1960’s and 1970’s. Ekelund’s work covered housing design, public building and urban planning. In his contribution to this book, Professor Vilhelm Helander has described Ekelund’s extensive sphere of influence. The other writers have concentrated on individual themes like Ekelund’s links to Nordic Classicism. His buildings among many include Helsinki Art Hall and Töölö Church. Additional essays describe Ekelund as an urban planner designing very livable architecture and much more.

Finnish architects and town planners have travelled abroad for study for some 200 years. They have sought influences from classical architecture, the metropolises of Europe, neighboring countries and beyond the oceans. This book gives an overview by ten experts on the relationship of Finnish architecture with the rest of the world from the close of the 18th century to the present day.
