This artist was born in Iceland in 1917 and came to the U.S. in 1943 and lived the next 57 years of her life here, until her death in January, 2000. She arrived with a strong academic training received in Reykjavik and Copenhagen and her career blossomed in New York, where she came to be recognized as an artist of unusual talent and originality. The ASF presented her with its Cultural Award in 1996 “in recognition of her contributions to furthering understanding between the U.S. and Iceland as painter of international renown whose distinctive work draws inspiration from both sides of the Atlantic”. Her paintings have forms clearly marked out in bold colors and details introduced to their geometrical minimum. Her subjects were mostly her friends and family, living at the bustling harbor. She also used the Icelandic nature as a source of inspiration and traveled to the countryside where she painted mountains, fields and sheep.

What is the critical relevance of Edvard Munch (1863–1944) to contemporary society? This publication places Munch's oeuvre in dialogue with works by the Norwegian-born, New York–based artist Bjarne Melgaard (born 1967), whose art has often provoked controversy as was the case with Munch, in his lifetime. Their bodies of creative work are related in numerous ways. Both have worked with reference to their own biography; there is also an artistic kinship between the two in terms of their painterly idioms, motifs and themes. Addressing subjects such as sexuality, gender, death, loneliness and alienation, they both address key issues of modern society. The catalogue explores the dystopian critique of civilization that underlies their respective oeuvres. In addition to a wide range of well-known works by both artists, it presents new pieces by Melgaard that explore the themes he considers of particular importance in Munch's oeuvre.

Merenmies, a Swedish artist, creates deeply disturbing pictures occupying a sphere between dream and nightmare. Her art tells odd, surrealist stories that are both unpleasant and funny. Her eclectic inspirations include horror comics and 16th century Flemish painting. The people in her pictures are horrible monsters. They have lost any resemblance to the reality that supplied her inspiration. Instead the figures now have become dreamy or nightmarish impressions and moods that she brings out with expressive, blurred watercolours combined with more precise black ink lines. This is Merenmies first big solo exhibition in Sweden and serves as a great introduction and also encourages you to become engrossed in this fascinating artist and her art.

Messagier, whose painting have been compared to ‘windblown waves of hair’ is gently and fondly examined and quoted here by Georgina Oliver. The work is basically colored photographs in green, magenta, and turquoise, often with a drawing added for another dimension. Apparent is his affinity for nature and his tongue in cheek look at the world around him.
