This artist was born in Iceland in 1917 and came to the U.S. in 1943 and lived the next 57 years of her life here, until her death in January, 2000. She arrived with a strong academic training received in Reykjavik and Copenhagen and her career blossomed in New York, where she came to be recognized as an artist of unusual talent and originality. The ASF presented her with its Cultural Award in 1996 “in recognition of her contributions to furthering understanding between the U.S. and Iceland as painter of international renown whose distinctive work draws inspiration from both sides of the Atlantic”. Her paintings have forms clearly marked out in bold colors and details introduced to their geometrical minimum. Her subjects were mostly her friends and family, living at the bustling harbor. She also used the Icelandic nature as a source of inspiration and traveled to the countryside where she painted mountains, fields and sheep.
