The work of Danish artist Per Kirkeby (b. 1938) resists easy categorization. Over the past four decades he has created an oeuvre that encompasses paintings on hardboard and canvas, blackboards, works on paper, small and large-scale bronze sculptures, ambitious brick structures and actual architecture, as well as an extensive body of writings that bear witness to his exceptional erudition. Such diverse terrains as landscapes, art history and popular culture are explored with a sense of curiosity and enquiry whose near-scientific rigor can be traced back to the artist's original university training as a geologist. These are his archives recently acquired by AROS - Aarhus Kunstmuseum in Denmark.

As a point of departure the exhibition is focusing on other artists, whom Kirkeby has written extensively about as well as colleagues. Artists like August Rodin, Paul Gauguin, Edward Weie, J.F. Willumsen, Vincent Van Gogh, Alberto Giacometti and Edward Munch are among those whom Kirkeby has devoted autobiographically and existential themes, pure visual technicalities are also explored, resulting in surprising new perspectives. In this way, Kunstforeningen approaches Per Kirkeby in a completely new manner, examining him both as an artist and as a human being. A wide selection of his paintings, sculptures, drawings and photographs are shown accompanied by some of the great artists that have inspired him.
