Though seventeenth century French painting was largely ignored in early Swedish collections, later donations of paintings and portraits by artists such as La Tour, Poussin, Vouet, Lorrain, Dughet, and Le Maire now comprise an impressive collection of over sixty works from the period of 1625 to 1660. This beautiful collection can now compete with the Nationalmuseum’s extensive collections of 18th century French painting, and pay tribute to the close political and cultural relations between Sweden and France during the 17th century. At this time, the Royal family and nobility vied with each other in importing designs for furniture and interiors from France in an effort to embellish their manors and palaces in the fashionable French style.
