One of a series of illustrated catalogues devoted to Stockholm Nationalmuseum’s Department of Paintings and Sculpture, this volume lists every sculpture in the collection, and includes illustrations of all but a few specialized collections. The Nationalmuseum is the central museum for Sweden’s national collections of paintings, sculpture, fine arts, drawings and prints. Consisting of 2300 items, ranging chronologically from classical antiquity to early 20th century, the sculpture collection includes large-scale marble sculpture, smaller terracotta and plaster sketches, plaster medallions, reliefs and portrait busts. The foundation of the Museum’s collection was established just before 1800 with the contribution of Gustav III’s collection of 300 pieces of sculpture to the state. This catalogue is divided into two sections, the first devoted to Swedish sculpture, represented best by the work of Johan Tobias Sergel, and the second section devoted to European sculpture, including a unique collection of bronze sculptures by Dutch born Adriaen de Vries and Renaissance and Baroque bronzes from Italy and France.
