During the Middle Ages, Saint George, the great martyr and dragonslayer, became one of the most popular figures in the West, the national saint of England, and the patron saint of Moscow and Barcelona, for example. Up until the present day he has been represented in innumerable depictions all over Europe. Remarkably enough, the most consummate representation of Saint George is to be found in Stockholm. This is because, more than five centuries ago, a Swedish regent granted the leading artist in the Baltic region unique resources so that he could produce something exceptional. The elaborate sculptural group with its larger- than- life statues was inaugurated in Stockholm City Church on New Years Eve 1489 by an emmissary from the Pope.
