The stylistic limitations of Sergel’s sculptural works are not present in these drawings, as they more aptly expose the full range of his talents, influences, and stylistic changes throughout his life. Though his sculptures exhibited Neo-Classical ideals, his drawings revealed greater influence from French realism as they display an intimate grasp of reality. Later in his life, his drawings were increasingly characterized by exuberant, full-blooded sketches done in picturesque caricature style.
