An exhibition of the work of two Norwegian painters focuses on the development of Nerdrum’s very controversial work from the beginning of the 1980s to the present day, while the works by Lundgren all date from the 1990s. With a career extending back to 1964, he has most recently discovered his greatest success and last year, the artist astounded both his critics and the general public by openly declaring himself to be a ‘kitsch painter.’ Since 1996, he is mostly known for his coastal landscapes influenced by Norwegian, Nordic and even Russian landscape painting. While these landscapes initially seem calm and peaceful, upon second glance, an ominous, stormy undertone seems to creep into the scene, thus lending these paintings extraordinary power.
