The Kon-Tiki Museum in Norway houses the original balsa raft with which Norwegian Thor Heyerdahl and his companions crossed the Pacific Ocean from Peru to Polynesia in 1947. It also displays the papyrus boat Ra-II, which crossed the Atlantic Ocean from Morocco to Barbados in 1970. This wonderful guide introduces the reader to Heyerdahl’s many exhilarating voyages to places such as Easter Island and the Galapagos, including the exotic artifacts he collected along the way. During these voyages, he tried to prove that pre-European mariners were able to travel much farther by sea than most believed. Today, the Kon-Tiki Museum has become an important center for the studies of Polynesian and South American prehistory.
