In 1891 the young Scandinavian explorer/photographer Gustaf Nordenskiöld, (1868-1895) systematically photographed the canyons of the Mesa Verde in Colorado as well as Hopi Indian villages in Arizona near the Grand Canyon. These black and white images of the majestic landscape of the American southwest, the Indian peoples, their architecture and their artifacts, have an immediate quality that belies their age, and are of important archaeological interest.
