There is a marked international interest in Vilhelm Hammershøi. At a Sotheby auction in 2015, the painting “Interiør Strandgade 30” sold for DKK 21.3 million. This is the highest price so far for a Danish painting. The book reproduces over 500 paintings, drawings, photographs, sketches, clippings, postcards and letters, which together provide a biographical, art-historical, cultural-historical look at Hammershøi and his work. The places were of great importance to Hammershøi, and he always chose very consciously where he should live - preferably in older houses. The home was his studio and often his favorite motif. The book visits many of the places where Hammershøi lived: Frederiksberg, Christianshavn, Falster, Paris, Gentofte, Refsnæs, Holland, Belgium, London and Rome.In the biographical section of the book, important people and focal points for his life and work are highlighted: the mother Frederikke Hammershøi, the sister Anna Hammershøi, the teacher P.S. Krøyer, his colleague Valdemar Schønheyder Møller, his wife Ida Hammershøi, his brother Svend Hammershøi.
