In the exhibition JULIE NORD - XENOGLOSSY we are invited into a strange home, where nothing looks as usual. Doll-like girls with shiny, almond eyes, bunches of flowers and cute little animals tempt us to take a closer look at the pictures. It all looks enchanting, but a closer look at them confronts us with an abundance of grotesque hybrid creatures, sculls and meat-eating plants. All over Julie Nord's pictures, disquieting alien elements force their way into everyday reality. She turns our conception of normality upside down and presents the smooth, glossy surface of reality as an illusion. She provides no unambiguous answers, but she challenges our imagination for better or for worse. Julie Nord (b. 1970) is an artist of eminent skill. She mingles motifs and expressions from popular culture, fairy tales, strip cartoons, everyday life and art history in scintillating, meticulous drawings in pencil, felt pen and Indian ink as well as in watercolours and video art. The motifs are woven into each other in all kinds of ways, balancing on the borderline between fairy tale and everyday realism. In connection with the exhibition, ARoS is published a coloured catalogue of 96 pages.
