Eero Saarinen wrote and spoke little, and his work appeared to have no direction, and certainly no consistency. This led many architectural writers to dismiss his importance as an architect. In the 1950s when Eero was practicing, or in the early 60s when most of his important buildings were being finished, there was still a prevalent belief that the purity of modern architecture was an important cause to be defended, and that its precepts and range of forms should not be questioned. Eero had a surprisingly short independent professional life. Few architects, with long productive lives, have managed to achieve the number of important and influential projects that were built from Eero’s designs.
