The bi-annual Spirit of Nature Wood Architecture Award was set up in 1999 by the Wood in Culture Association. The Association was established to further the use of wood as a building material and to encourage new and young design talent. As a major international prize, it highlights examples of progressive and creative uses of timber. In 2006 the prize was awarded the architect Peter Zumthor from Switzerland. He selects the materials for his buildings depending on the situation. Wood has nevertheless always had a central role in his works. For the general public the architect’s best known wooden structure is probably the Swiss pavilion for the Hannover World Expo in 2000. He reinvents the house in each of his works, and astonishes people through the whole gamut of emotions. Plans and elevations included.
