Flagstad was the daughter of Norwegian conductor Michael Flagstad (1869-1930) and pianist Marie Flagstad Johnsrd. She recieved her early vocal training in Oslo and made her debut in 1913 as Nuri in Tiefland by d’ Albert. After further study with Albert Westwang in Oslo and Gillis Bratt in Stockholm she became a successful performer in Norway, primarily in operetta. Often hailed as one of the most beautiful voices of the 20th century, Flagstad’s voice was distinguished by its dark sound, full volume, aristocratic breadth and perfect singing technique.
