The quartet was founded in 1979 by students of Berlin’s Hanns Eisler conservatoire and its teachers. The ensemble has come to be regarded as the epitome of high calibre sound and fine musical timbre throughout Europe and North America. Founded in Berlin, the quartet owes its name to its first founding violinist of over 12 years, Ulrike Petersen. Guided by mentors such as the Amadeus Quartet, Sandor Vegh, and Thomas Brandis, the quartet won top prizes at the international music competitions in Evian in 1985, Florence in 1986, and at the ARD Competition in Munich in 1987. Today the quartet is a regular guest in all the major musical centres of Europe and beyond.
