Harbours are the interface of sea and land and here is reading focusing on this subject. The North Sea is an important highway of international sea-borne trade and contains some of the largest fish stocks of the world. In later years the extraction of oil and gas has emphasized the importance of the sea bottom. But most importantly since the late Middle Ages the hinterland of the North West European countries have developed a rich mercantile and manufacturing economy demanding the transportation of goods across the sea and the supply of the resources of the sea. The harbours of the North Sea reflect the economic history of these wider developments. The history of harbours over time illustrate the economy of hinterland and in itself provide us with keys to an understanding of growth and decline.
