Presenting the newly discovered letters of correspondence between the royal monarchs of Russia and Sweden, Catherine II (1729-96) and Gustave III (1746-92) is historically monumental as these letters reveal previously unknown details about the crisis in Europe that followed the French Revolution. It is also noteworthy because of the striking differences between these two monarchs, ranging from their varying interests, age, and degree of power. Also, though Gustave III did not fulfill his wishes, these letters attest to the strength of his argument that has been overshadowed by his eventual defeat. 184 mostly unedited letters are presented here, organized by subjects such as family, travel, the war, the European crisis, and their more secretive, private letters.
