Helsinki’s House of Culture, consisting of a concert hall, office-building, and lecture wing, represents a turning point in Aalto’s architecture. He masterfully combines both sculptural cubism and unconstrained plasticity of form. As this building is sandwiched between traffic and nature, Aalto appropriately used two kinds of form: organic and rational. A poignant introduction to Aalto’s notable free-form red brick buildings of the 1950s.

Photographs from the building’s conception to completion, as well as plans and elevations are included.

What makes this church design unique is the use of free form and the artistic lighting. The aim was to design a white building for a well-lit pine forest, that would glimmer between the pine trunks as the visitor approached. This book carefully describes the mastering of conception and construction that went into the building of the Church of the Three Crosses. Alvar Aalto created a space tapering in the form of a fan towards the alter, where the symbolism of the trinity creates mysticism within the light and the music of the organ. Plans and elevations included.
