An unusual picture of the evolution of the Official Residence of the President of Finland by the architect Reima Pietilä (1923-1993), from its conception in 1983 to its eventual completion in 1993. The architecture of Mäntyniemi demands no critical synthesis, nor does it deserve merely a singular approach. Rather, this book presents the interpretations of various international and Finnish writers and photographers, who emphasize different aspects of this building of contrasts. On the one hand, the architecture seems brilliantly dislocated and dissonant. Yet many who have visited the building look in awe at the flowing space, the rhythm and all-embracing light.
