The museums depicted in these exquisite photographs all share both the wonderful clarity of light and color as well as the beautiful, simple living style for which Scandinavia is known. They also share the quality of seeming especially alive, because they continue to poignantly reflect the life of the person once living within their walls. Though they share these typical Scandinavian characteristics, these homes reflect a wide range of architectural styles. Included are homes of renowned figures such as Michael and Anna Ancher, Karin and Carl Larsson, Anders Zorn, Carl Linnaeus, and Eero Saarinen as well as simple farm homes and townhouses from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland. Nagel’s evocative photographs are perfectly balanced by the insightful writing of renowned architect Vibe Udsen.

Inspiring photographs of this contemporary ecclesiastical structure in central Oslo ST. HALLVARD KIRKE OG KLOSTER (St. Hallvard Church and Convent). The modern abbey houses medieval ruins of the original cathedral and cloistered dwelling quarters for the Carmelite nuns, and is in all a powerful example of sacred space in secular surroundings, and of architectural sensitivity to ancient and modern practice. Handsome drawings and excellent color photographs make this an important document of Nordic urban planning.

The Norwegian architect Frederik Konow Lund (1889-1970) had a very distinguished career with a number of major commissions to his credit, including the Grieg Concert Hall, the City Hall in Bergen, many other public buildings and many residences. His architecture harmonizes in a beautiful way with the landscape and/or the surrounding buildings, using the materials at hand from that particular area--mostly wood and stone. This is an exquisitely beautiful book showing the craftsman detail from the outside of the buildings as well as the interiors.
