HEART Herning Museum of Contemporary Art in Herning, Denmark is a new building designed by the renowned American architect Steven Holl. He showed a keen interest in the project, first of all because the museum owns a unique collection by the Italian conceptual arte povera-artist Piero Manzoni. In 1960 Manzoni was invited to Herning for the first time by Aage Damgaard, the owner of a well-known shirt factory. Aage Damgaard’s interest in contemporary art resulted in a visionary model for cooperation between businesses and artists – and in founding a museum. Holl’s complex structures are surrounded by a landscape of hills and ponds which fits in the environment. The single-story building, with its natural light and innovative roof construction, refers to the formal vocabulary of the factory opposite from the 1960s in the circular shape of a collar. From a bird’s-eye perspective the new building recalls outstretched shirt sleeves and the in situ façade has a surface resembling a wrinkled white shirt. Opening of the museum: HEART – Herning Museum of Contemporary Art, Herning, September 9, 2009

This double-issue describes the development and significance of the new generation of Dutch architects, who have emerged in the second half of the 80s with a contemporary interpretation of the modernist tradition of the Netherlands. Dutch modernism in the architecture and art of today is described in 13 articles. Two outstanding architects of the twenties, Jan Duiker and J.P.F. Peutz, who have influenced the younger generation, are presented. The second part of the magazine features 25 architectural projects from the period 1985-90, including work by Wiel Arets, Jo Coenen, Mecanoo, Kees Christiaanse, Koen van Velsen, Dobbelaar, De Kovel and De Vroom.

This skilled architect and industrial designer is well known not only in Denmark, but also in the rest of the world. Written with eloquence and beautifully illustrated, this magnificent book explores the range of his work, such as his building at Odense University, Kastrup Airport in Copenhagen, and the National Museum in Bahrain. For Holscher, who was strongly influenced by his mentor Arne Jacobsen, architecture and design have nothing to do with accidental qualities that vary through time according to aesthetic conventions. Rather, he believes it as an intrinsic dimension in our perception of the world.
