Thanks to King Gustav III’s cultural interests and passion for architecture, the late 1700’s in Sweden were virtually a Golden Age of Art in Sweden. Though so distant from centers of Neoclassicism, such as Paris or Rome, many masterpieces of Neoclassicism emerged in this small country of the North. This gorgeous book examines these masterpieces, such as the Royal Castle, Gunnebo, Haga, and Rosendal, and includes a comprehensive catalog of furniture types and styles with drawings by architects, artists, and artisans.

This project began in 1990, when Bjørn Nørgaard was commissioned by Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II to pictorially depict Danish history, an immense work of research, drawing literally thousands of figures and historical events and finally commission Manufactures Nationales des Bobelins et de Beauvais in France to weave the17 tapestries to be displayed at the Danish Parliament in the Great Hall at Christiansborg. The experience to see and learn Danish history through these vividly colorful tapestries was an experience, which will be with me for life. If you can go and see them when you next visit Denmark.

OCTO is one of Denmark’s youngest design groups, formed in 1998 by eight active designers from all over the country. The photographs of the objects are of extremely high quality, and the layout of the book is a design triumph in itself, with matte color photos lit scenographically. The images are accompanied by unusually insightful remarks on the use of design in the 90s, and also by intriguing prose-verse on the human experience of hand-crafts and human designs.
