Rørbye (1803-48) was the only Danish painter of the Golden Age who ventured to travel beyond Italy. The painting in Aarhus, dated 1846, is based on drawings and watercolours made on location in Greece and Turkey and on two oil-sketches from Italy. During his stay in Istanbul from December 20,1835 to February 1, 1836, he succeeded in making numerous sketches, but none in oil. The rich light and splendid colouring therefore must be the artist’s own contribution to the composition. His essay views the monuments of Istanbul as gigantic, romantic ruins of Constantinople.

There is nothing static or stationary about these wonderful old trees. Their limbs twist and grope and seem to be moving as you view them; they have been buffeted by sea winds and so reach out at unpredictable and agonizing angles; or they are leafless and bore-holed, suggesting a valiant, if unsuccessful, bid for suvival. This is a book for the illustrator and the lover of nature.

During the Middle Ages, Saint George, the great martyr and dragonslayer, became one of the most popular figures in the West, the national saint of England, and the patron saint of Moscow and Barcelona, for example. Up until the present day he has been represented in innumerable depictions all over Europe. Remarkably enough, the most consummate representation of Saint George is to be found in Stockholm. This is because, more than five centuries ago, a Swedish regent granted the leading artist in the Baltic region unique resources so that he could produce something exceptional. The elaborate sculptural group with its larger- than- life statues was inaugurated in Stockholm City Church on New Years Eve 1489 by an emmissary from the Pope.

The sames were originally hunters living in the northern part of Scandinavia, Finland and Russia. Their culture bears more similarity to that of the indigenous people of Greenland than the agricultural culture of the rest of Scndinavia. Unlike the Nordic art, the Same art did not start developing until the 16th century. Asger Jorn has selected more than 500 works of art aging from then to now to describe the art of this desolate nomadic people including utilitarian utensals, shaman sculpture, ranging in materials in wood, bone, textiles, leather, metal.
