H.F. Antell (1847-1893), a Finnish physician living in Paris, used his considerable wealth to collect coins, antiquities and art, many of which are now found in the National Museum of Finland and the Finnish National Gallery. This book contains his biography and a history of the acquisitions made by the Antell Delegation, a body of trustees appointed in 1894 to manage the capital and collections. His magnificent collection, as presented here, contains: paintings by Nordic artists such as Edelfelt, Gallen-Kallela, Karl Isaksson, Magnus Enckell, Pekka Halonen, Ernst Josephson, Zorn, Munch; paintings by Van Gogh, Cezanne, Gauguin, Sérusier and Signac; a variety of other intriguing objects ranging from Japanese prints, Native American pottery and Siberian idols to Finnish rugs, Biedemeier silver, and Chinese silk costumes; and much more.

Hammershøi, a very unique painter, is best known for his interiors. However, he also painted figures and landscapes in color, which almost seems like black and white; he truly knew how to portray the Danish landscape, subtle and beautiful. He was critically acclaimed during 1982/83, when this retrospective exhibition was shown.
