These two latest series have been painted in the 1990’s. While Urban Bourbons consists of brilliant, colorful visualizations painted in acrylic on aluminium, Night Shades shows us a dark, monochrome shadow world, etched with acid in the hard surface of the metal. The works of Rauschenberg, an American, have been exhibited widely, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and at the Smithsonian in Washington, and he was awarded first prize at the Venice Biennale in 1964.

Robert Rauschenberg has had the capacity of being one of the most important contemporary artists of the 20th Century - and still continues to be until this very day. Throughout his life Rauschenberg has been cutting edge - looking at one of his photo collages exceeds a whole exhibition of contemporary photography. His works are of America. Not the usual soap operas and surface culture, his works portray the anti-commercial and the everyday America. The powerful visual effect of these images is the aesthetic orchestration of the multiple images of reality, far removing the works from mere documentary.

The first American post-war artist to appropriate material for works of art. He juxtaposed images of war, new technological products, important politicians, and sporting events - with reproductions of works from art books, and photos of anonymous everyday objects, taken by the artist himself. These images were playfully enlarged or reduced in size prior to their silk screening onto convas. He then would add paint to the canvases, often in an abstract and poetic manner, with thick brushstrokes and using a vibrant palette. The focus of this exhibition is on this specific period of his artistic career when he used the silkcreen technique, revolutionary for his practice. In addition, exhibited are also a number of his transfer drawings, all executed in the 1960’s.
