This large-format, clothbound, all-color art book records many of the life-long artistic accomplishments of Olive Jensen Nordby. The 37 woodcut prints and 10 paintings reproduced in the volume demonstrate Nordby’s love of nature, light, color, and form. The 120-page volume grew out of a privately printed 2011 publication of the same name that was edited by Jay L. Jensen and Ingrid M. Jensen and includes an interview with the artist. It was published by the Norwegian American Genealogical Center & Naeseth Library in Madison, Wisconsin. The daughter of Norwegian immigrants to Minnesota, Olive Nordby has enjoyed a long career as both artist and philanthropist. Her sensitive hand-colored woodcuts have gained a wide following and national recognition, winning many awards at juried exhibitions. Majoring in art at St. Olaf College, Nordby did post-graduate work at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and the St. Paul School of Art, and studied printmaking at the Madison Vocational and Technical School in Madison, Wisconsin.

This exhibition of approximately 75 works by 13 of Norway’s leading artists provide a unique perspective on the vitality and originality of Norway’s thriving contemporary art scene, as well as the strong connection between the visual arts in Norway and the country’s extraordinary landscape. All of the works in the exhibition are drawn from the extensive collection of Her Majesty Queen Sonja of Norway, who has curated Norge with the assistance of collaborating curator Hellandsjø, who is currently Head of Special Projects at the National Museum of Norway and will assume the post of Director of the Henie-Onstad Art Center in March 2005. Knowledgeable and active collector as well as an important patron of contemporary art, Queen Sonja has amassed an extensive collection - comprised largely of landscapes - that reflect her deep knowledge of art history as well as her enthusiasm for the geography and nature of Norway. The artists represented in Norge - Marianne Heske, Olav Christopher Jenssen, Thomas Pihl, Ørnulf Opdahl, Knut Rumohr, Bjørn-Sigurd Tufta, Kåre Tveter among others - include both established and emerging artists spanning 50 years of Norwegian art.

Norrie’s multimedia installation, involving video, a wall- collage, and painting, is aptly entitled Thermostat. It reminds us that things may blow at any moment. The earth, for example, has only a shallow, fragile skin, hardly containing its dense, fiery interior. Norrie wants us to contemplate whether or not we want this body to heal or to fester, to breathe or to burst, or to strike a balance between fission and inertia.
