Mauno Markkula (1905-1959) was a painter of his personal imaginary world and fantasies. His works are an explosion of colour, where the sun is in flames, the moon glows red, yellow and orange, and people seldom appear. Awash with colour, Markkula’s paintings of his intuitive internal visions were very different to the works of earlier Finnish expressionists. Here, 140 of his works are presented with multiple biographical and critical writings about his life and work.

For many years, any discussion about sexuality primarily took feminism as its starting point, but in recent years a focus on male identity has become of great interest. With essays and displayed artwork, this catalog is a contribution to the exploration of this pluralised concept. For this reason, 16 artists, men, women, heterosexuals and homosexuals have all been invited to participate in this exhibition, including Claus Carstensen, Ellen Cantor, Michael Elmgreen & Ingar Dragset, Paul McCarthy, Tracey Moffatt, and more.

Using an often hyperrealistic idiom, Matelli describes the more disquieting sides of human beings and human society. His sculptures straddle the boundary between uneasiness and humor: in a number of the works he turns innocence into absurdity, such as when animals or humans are maltreated by various weapons and devices.

In honor of the acclaimed French artist Henri Matisse, this exhibition seems to highlight his marked authenticity to line and color, above all. Figuring prominently in the inception of modern art, Matisse’s paintings are completely unique because of their characteristically unfixed sense of space, dazzling use of color, and captivating patterns. This catalog includes an interview with the artist from 1951 and it presents an array of his works that are highly representative of his multiple talents as painter, draftsman, and sculptor.
