Inspired by his multicultural background of Cuban, European, and African descent, Lam found that the free form of surrealism suited his varied needs for expression. This collection of critical essays and biographical anecdotes revives the originality in the work of the Cuban-born artist and, by addressing his relationships with Picasso and Andre Breton, for example, it provides insight into Lam’s significant role in the surrealist movement as a whole.

When Wes Lang was invited by Aarhus Kunstmuseum’s large exhibtion gallery, the aim was to convey the experience the museum curators had in visiting Lang’s studio in New York. Delighting the curators, Lang agreed to pack his studio down entirely, ship it across the Atlantic and reconstrucit it in a 1:1 scate at the museum. This book presents that experience with full page color plates, photographs and commentary. The artist had already come to the attention of many art lovers in Denmark, and, despite his young age, a host of Danish collectors and museums have long since spotted his characteristic style. It seems as if his appreciation of the tattooing aesthetics of the American biker culture together with the American music tradition and the California pin-ups from the 1970’s- in fact, all his cultural history references to the best and worst sides of America- are speaking directly to the viewer. Despite a great number of gallery exhibitions worldwide, this was Wes Lang’s first major museum exhibition. It shows both early and recent works from private collections the world over.
