A non-Western female artist arriving in the US as Pop art and Minimalism were beginning to take shape, Yayoi Kusama (born 1929) was part of these milieus but also remained somewhat outside of them, developing a highly distinctive artistic universe. Yayoi Kusama: In Infinity offers an extensive overview of the major stages of Kusama’s work: from her abstract, intensively hand-crafted Infinity Net paintings (which made Kusama’s initial reputation in New York) to the soft, eroticized furniture sculptures covered in hundreds of white, phallic forms, ending with Kusama’s recent works that shape whole spaces as intense environments. This volume also includes new essays discussing Kusama’s artistic and literary work and four of Kusama’s own poems.

In his work, Kvium addresses a creator who paradoxically appears to be absent. A vacuum of meaning at the center of the world is both marvelous and hideous. In order not to be depressed to the point of suicide, we must continue to hold the images in these paintings in mind as questions, not conclusions. Though we all question and occasionally conclude that this is the horrific truth of our miserable and petty lives; we still go on each day painting, writing, believing in the value of creation, relation, doing and being. Kvium’s work, mostly figurative and often grotesque, brings these issues into question, while also questioning the act of creation itself. This multimedia exhibition includes 18 acrylic painted dolls, drawings, cast iron eggs, television screens, and dual videos.

These terrifying paintings, most of which date from 1990-93, illustrate the artist’s obsession with the great pain of life: the inevitability of death. They are powerful expressions of modern angst.
