Though the Middle Ages in Sweden marked a major shift in attitude towards the sick, major support of artistic decoration of hospitals arose only during the 1930s. This book discusses the history of Swedish hospitals and their aesthetic environments from the Middle Ages until present. Today, as never before, artistic decoration and embellishment have come to play a significant role in Swedish medical care.

The first exhibition at the HEART Museum was a retrospective exhibition by the Italian artist Jannis Kounelli (born in Greece). The exhibition is the first bigger presentation of Kounellis' work in Scandinavia and the artist have made a number of new pieces for the opening exhibition at HEART.Jannis Kounellis (b. 1936) has for more than forty years played an important role in contemporary art. He had a central role in the 1960's Arte-Povera movement which opposed the painting that wished to redefine the language of art. Using matarials as steel, coal, fabric, bags, coffee, fire, live animals and humans Jannis Kounellis creates radical and very original sculptures, performances and installations.

This book raises the question af art’s role in the hospitals. The author is a member of the art board at Århus hospital and has vigorously fought for art’s role in the healing process. The board has long been one of it’s kind in Denmark, and this book fully describes the story and evolution of the board and the collecting of the art at the hospital. From its meager start in 1985 to its current role in the new mergers of hospitals in the greater Århus area. It is richly illustrated with examples of the art from Århus hospital along with anecdotes of the raison d’etre for the artworks and their locations in the hospital. The book provides an interesting view on art’s effect in the shaping of the modern day hospital through both examples and articles. Includes among many artists Anette Abrahamsson, Torben Ebbesen, Poul Gernes, Nils Erik Gjerdevik, Oxtavian Neagu, Lars Nørgaard, Poul Pedersen, Lene Adler Petersen, Tal R, Lars Ravn et al.
