This book publishes a treasure from the National Museum of Finland--a rare set of Buddhist hanging scrolls, or thangkas, marked by vibrant colors and naturalistic forms. The set represents a peculiar Sino-Mongolian style of Lamaist painting. Also included is a panoramic map of the Wutai Mountains and photographs of archaeological finds and statuary from this region. An informative and interesting text accompanies the illustrations.

In 1891 the young Scandinavian explorer/photographer Gustaf Nordenskiöld, (1868-1895) systematically photographed the canyons of the Mesa Verde in Colorado as well as Hopi Indian villages in Arizona near the Grand Canyon. These black and white images of the majestic landscape of the American southwest, the Indian peoples, their architecture and their artifacts, have an immediate quality that belies their age, and are of important archaeological interest.
