Vibrations narrates from within and around buildings. Through works by the Danish drawing office Lundgaard & Tranberg Architects, the architecture editor of the newspaper Politiken, Karsten R.S. Ifversen, examines the art of making architecture vibrate on the spot, in human beings and with its time. With a philosophical gaze and in clear language, he answers the question: What makes good architecture? To examine this, Ifversen attempts to grasp what it is about Lundgaard & Tranberg that makes them the most influential Danish drawing office of our time. In the foreword, Karsten R.S. Ifversen writes: “They take their point of departure in a Nordic tradition and the conditions of the place, but their will to renew architecture transcends the merely local and places them in a class with some of the world’s leading drawing offices.”

La Grande Arche crowns the historic axis of Paris, as if La Defense were its prow. One could sense even in the first draughts that Jonathan Otto von Spreckelsen, a barely known Danish architect, had by sheer force and purity conceived an exceptional gesture. We feel today that the monument will remain in history, after having marked the second French Revolution centenary. This is somewhat similar to the manner in which Gustave Eiffel’s work had illustrated in the first centenary. This book examines La Grande Arche with full page color photos and wonderful descriptions.

Already regarded as the most successful Swedish architect of all time, Gert Wingårdh is nevertheless not a “pure product” of Swedish architecture—the solutions he devises for his various projects are too multifarious and cosmopolitan. Eschewing both dogma and predefined individual style, with each new building Wingårdh surprises his clients and admirers. This monograph reveals his blend of function, sustainability and aesthetics.
