As a young architect in 1925, Aalto wrote, “The only proper goal of architecture is: build naturally. Don’t overdo it. Don’t do anything without good reason. Everything superfluous turns ugly with time.” This requirement that Aalto set for architecture was beautifully realized in his own residential and office building which was completed in 1936. A marvelous guide to Aalto’s creative streak, in its most personal manifestation.

In 1954-5, Aalto designed a studio building in the Munkkiniemi district of Helsinki in order to ease the space problems in his office. He created an open-plan office with a drawing office in addition to the actual studio itself, in order “to provide both peace for the individual to work in and the opportunity to work as a group.”

This book and the exhibition that accompanies it provide a fascinating addition to our knowledge of Aalto’s work as a whole. The projects presented here have been chosen from lesser-known work of different periods and were mainly designed to be built outside Finland. Here is a voyage of discovery for the reader into what is perhaps one of the most interesting areas of Aalto’s work. How unrealised designs would have turned out in reality, however, will remain an eternal question mark. Includes plans and elevations.

This lavish, clothbound monograph on the architecture and social program of Alvar Aalto features extensive photographs of many lesser known public building interiors and exterior details. Text and titles are in four languages, making this volume truly accessible to a wide audience. It is the most recent, and one of the richest additions to the worldwide Aalto bibliography. Though not the most comprehensive book on Aalto, it is a visual delight, featuring three four-page foldouts, in a stunning and poetic display of his work.
