The idea of the book has a symbolic and cultural significance all over the world. The artists’ book is a relatively new artist medium that addresses so many concerns and issues in artistic production, many of which are particularly important in today’s discourse. This ‘new’ medium has its own complex history, which is older than the history of printing itself; it is about communication technology. The increasing activiy of book artists and the diversity of approaches are offering new views and changing old ways of seeing books. What this exhibit tried to do was display a number of American artists’ books that should begin to provide some insight into how different these books can be. Nearly every page consists of close to a full page rich color photo of a work.

This book catalogs the 138 works included in this exhibition from artists such as Carl Larsson, Bruno Liljefors, Yngve Berg, Birger Lundquist, Isaac Grünewald, and Georg Pauli, to name a few. Experience the world of typography, the art of printing, with this in-depth examination of the beautiful and meticulous work of Vidar Forsberg. A truly unique figure, Forsberg held utmost respect for the materials with which he worked. Rather than opting for the practical innovations of modern technology, he remained steadfast in his faith to the art of craftmanship, and especially to the knowledge and tradition behind typography that have taken generations to develop and refine. For him, typography was not only an empty form through which content was displayed. Rather, Forsberg attempted to convey content through his work. With magnificent illustrations of his books and prints, this gorgeous book, in both form and content, remains faithful to the subject at hand.
