Bannerman, the daughter of a Scottish minister, married a surgeon in the British Army of India. She spent 30 years of her life in India and regularly wrote illustrated letters with fantasy storylines to amuse their children. In 1898 there “came into her head, evolved by the moving of a train,” the entertaining story of a little black boy, beautifully clothed, who outwits a succession of tigers, and not only saves his own life but gets a stack of tiger-striped pancakes. The book appeared in England in 1899 and was an immediate success.

When the world was a thousand years younger and minstrels traveled the roads, there was a solemn monastery in the French countryside where the monks made beautifully illustrated books. Their most prized artwork was the painting of the weeping Madonna above the altar. When a boy jester comes to the monastery, he is offered food and shelter, and repays the monks with juggling and dancing. The old Abbot wants to throw him out, but then he sees a change in the painting of the Madonna, and the monastery will never be the same. Helena Olofsson’s story for readers 4-8 is illustrated in a modern naive picturebook style, but is also punctuated throughout with art reminiscent of medieval manuscripts.
