This book is Ingmar Bergman’s effort to “account for the sources” of his creation. It is at once a penetrating, unsentimental portrait of artistry and a fascinating self-portrait, a critical testament and a memoir. Because Bergman’s life and films are so intertwined, this book adds much to our knowledge of the man while offering countless insights into and a new understanding of the work.

The collection opens with “The Political Thinker”, the first Danish play to be produced in the new Danish Theatre, and ends with “The Burial of Danish Comedy”, literally the funeral service for the bankrupt theatre. Three more of Holberg’s renowned character comedies follow, “Jean de France”, “Jeppe of the Hill”, and “Erasmus Montanus”, along with his literary satire “Ulysees von Ithacia”. The final two plays demonstrate his ability to write shorter comic works, “The Christmas Party”, a scathing comedy of manners, and “Pernille’s Brief Experience as a Lady”, a situation comedy that satirizes baby-switching.

The book is a photographic narrative on New York, all pictures taken as handheld camera shots in the dark winter months of the year. They give a personal, filmic view of this famous metropole. Johansson explains his work this way: “Here there is no beginning, nor end. No manuscript. There is a rhythm. A sequence of scenarios. Each scene is comprised of various takes. Stills, fames from the great film reel, every picture is part of a narrative.” Also, the book has a postscript by Mogens Rukov, the famous script-author of many recent Danish films.

Video artist Marie-Jo Lafontaine is known primarily for her monumental video sculptures suggesting both passion and violence. The Nordjyllands Kunstmuseum in Aalborg featured her art at a 1992 exhibition, and this interesting catalog has an article in German, English and Danish. Poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke has inspired Lafontaine, and the video images address among other topics the tragedy of political instability in contemporary Europe.
