This 1962 recording of Sibelius’s last symphony is led by one of Russia’s most dynamic conductors. A mere 20 minutes long, the work evolves in one continuous movement, with various tempo changes, climaxes, and anticlimaxes leading to a dramtic, tragic conclusion. In contrast, Rakastava, a three-movement suite from 1911, celebrates the composer’s return to an unsophisticated style of Finnish folk music. Both pieces receive finely calibrated playing from the Russians-the first pungent and strong (espcially in the signature trombone solo), the second more austere and haunting. The disc is rounded out by a modernist piece Prokofiev wrote in 1930 and Glazunov’s set of eight melodic and captivating dances, including a waltz, mazurka, and polonaise.

This recording was done after a small tour in France and Denmark. Having played for six consecutive nights, they more or less did it as a concert, and only tried second takes on a couple of tunes. All of the members of the quartet knew each other from previous playing-contexts, and a high degree of complicity was found very quickly. Most of the recorded tunes are new; and were more or less written with this particular group in mind - trying to provide maximum space for initiative and spontaneous invention.

Sinding (1856-1941) was born in Kongsberg, Norway. His special relationship with text as a means of artistic expression resulted in more than 250 songs, characterized by singable, folklike melodies and a harmonic style solidly rooted in German late-Romanticism. Sindig turned also to contemporary Norwegian and Danish poets, choosing verse inspired by nature, such as the songs from Op. 18 to texts by Vilhelm Krag, from Op. 19 to texts by Holger Drachmann and Svend Trøst, and Op. 36 to poems by Nils Collett Vogt. Bodil Arnesen is among the most talented of Norway’s sopranos.
