A self-taught patchworker, this artist describes her own innovative techniques that she has developed in her past twenty-two years of making quilts. Differing from the many other books on quiltmaking, this book expresses first and foremost the joy and inspiration which her work has given her. Though her works are mostly inspired by traditional patchwork, her most contemporary work also demonstrates her willingness to experiment with techniques such as strip-piecing, though she has not yet ventured into the territory of the full-fledged “art-quilt.” Nielsen’s anecdotes as well as the colorful illustrations of her quilts both emphasize the art of quiltmaking as a lifelong challenge whereby joy is contained in the process, rather than in the product.
