During her long and prolific career as an industrial designer and ultimately, as an architect, Magnusson Grossman played a particularly important role in Southern California. She designed houses from her native Sweden to Beverly Hills and the Mojave Desert, houses which stirred architectural critics to comment on the freshness of ideas and structural elegance of her designs. This volume examines her designs for Glenn of California and Ralph O. Smith, and features photographs by archival photographer Julius Shulman.

Nothing could be lovelier than a traditional Swedish table or a decoratively shaped mirror frame. Their balanced forms and simple finish have a timeless elegance that suits both modern and traditional homes. The 35 woodworking projects in this book come directly from Sweden’s past, and the original pieces can be seen in famous Swedish museums. Many of the pieces evoke familiar early American styles, but with a distinctive Swedish touch. The projects include small and easy-to-make things such as a plate rack, child’s stool, tray, and simple cutting boards. Others are larger and more challenging, like the stepladder. Each piece is photographed and every detail is accuarately described. Step-by step instructions and expertly drawn how-to diagrams are given for every project. There are also instructions for traditional Swedish finishing, painting and staining methods.

Painting on glass can be an inexpensive way to brighten and beautify ordinary household objects, such as cookie and storage jars, candlestick holders, serving dishes, carafes, glassware, vases and more. This book suggests paints, colors, and brushes, describes such traditional motifs as rosemaling, and shows you how to create contemporary abstract designs with special techniques.
