Embroiderers will welcome this delightful collection of charted designs by one of the greatest living designers of Danish counted cross-stitch designs. Here are more than 40 exquisite florals. All the designs are color keyed to both DMC and Danish Flower Thread embroidery floss, and because the chart makes it easy to vary the size of the design, they can be used to decorate anything from small pillows to bedspreads. The patterns lend themselves not only to cross-stitch, but also to needlepoint, rug-hooking, other forms of counted thread embroidery.

By the 1970’s, rapidly changing tastes in America diminished the importance of Danish Modern, and sales - which had built steadily into the 1960’s - began to decline. A renaissance occurred by the 1990’s, however, and today Danish Modern furniture is not only back in vogue but commanding astronomical prices. Still, it has been difficult for new designers to overcome the towering reputations of figures such as Jacobsen, Juhl, and Wegner. More than half a century later, their designs continue to define the qualities of Danish Modern that spoke so strongly to American tastes in the last century. This exhibition presented some of the greatest of designers and their designs. Richly illustrated with text by three experts in the field.

Danish Modern explores the development of mid-century modernist design in Denmark from historical, analytical and theoretical perspectives. Mark Mussari explores the relationship between Danish design aesthetics and the theoretical and cultural impact of Modernism, particularly between 1930 and 1960. He considers how Danish designers responded to early Modernist currents: the Stockholm Exhibition of 1930, their rejection of Bauhaus aesthetic demands, their early fealty to wood and materials, and the tension between cabinetmaker craft and industrial production as it challenged and altered their aesthetic approach. Tracing the theoretical foundations for these developments, Mussari discusses the writings and works of such figures as Poul Henningsen, Arne Jacobsen, Hans Wegner, Nanna Ditzel, and Finn Juhl.
