A catalogue of quiet photographs that celebrate the elemental nature of things. Engberg has rejected precision lenses and f-stops and returned to the basics. Her artistic vision is achieved by the most rudimentary of means, through a pinhole. She is from Denmark and the tenets of Danish modernism are deeply instilled in her: simple forms, pure line, repeated elements. She turned to pinhole photography because it reduces the visible world to abstract form. Enberg’s fine art photography follows three decades of successful commercial photography, first in Copenhagen and London, then in New York, where she has lived since 1968.

A new time requires new pictures. Here are classic texts illustrated in modern ways. H. C. Andersen was happy with photographs. The photographer Marianne Engberg is pleased with H. C. Andersen. Her poetic illustrations by H.C. Andersen's lesser-known and short stories are now published in Danish and in English. The pictures are photographic. There are photo frames made in darkroom on a glass plate. Without camera. Some objects are found objects on the street in Brooklyn, where Engberg resides and where she has worked since 1963. Others are cut out in paper, such as H. C. Andersen himself did and turned into photograms. A stunning book / an artist’s book for collectors.
