In this book, Stackelberg, a photographer since 1980, presents her most starkly personal, emotional work. This collection of photograms, produced without camera on photosensitive material, are the outward expression of a lengthy grieving process following the sudden death of a loved one. It is as though the pictures have risen from the unconscious, the story only becoming clear afterwards: a movement from acute distress to disintegration and finally a return to life.

“The nature of the media is different, and therefore they must be treated differently. A watercolor gets life from the white paper. A photograph is blackened by liquid and light. Photography is not just depiction, it is nature.” , by Erik Steffensen. He titles all the beautiful photographs with a name of a famous artist, as that particular photograph relates to the kind of painting genre of the artist like Strindberg, Købke, Friedrich, etc.

Stepping out of his car along Route 89, Steffensen encountered silence and a wonderful gray light over the volcano craters. Green and cobalt lava. Rain over the volcanos. Thunder with voluminous cloud formations. During his time in the Painted Desert of Arizona, he pressed the release button sixteen times. But, it took one year to stretch the instant in the desert to 21 individual perspectives. Fusing these landscapes with electronic images, Steffensen considers nylon and pixels as “natural phenomenon” also, corresponding to the chemistry that make the landscape a skin on the surface of the photograph.
