The photographer’s struggle for recognition as an art form has yet to succeed in Denmark, but Larsen is on the brink of breaking down this wall, as he roams the landscape with his lens, doing so naturally. At the same time, he dissmisses romantic reminiscences in these “pastoral” images, creating the paradox that has come to be known as his artwork.

In his book, “Tamaviaartumik,” Finn Larsen captures the luscious green gardens of Greenland, a culture seldom documented, through his photographs. Despite the fact, that the large, cold island which both on the map, and in most people’s perception, is white and primarily consists of snow, icebergs, polar bears and Eskimos, Finn Larsen manages to bring out the true color of the island. Photographs of the Greenlandic gardeners - their gardens in full blossom - proudly showing off their crops, make the name Greenland appear a lot more sensible, and what is more important - it offers a much needed counterbalance to the stereotypical image of Greenland. The book itself is like an artist’s book, very beautifully done. The text is inside the front hard cardboard cover, the rest of the book is all color photographs with no text - a collector’s item.

This catalogue, published for the exhibition that celebrated 1999 inauguration of the Nordic Embassies in Berlin, presents six wonderful Nordic photographers: Lars Tunbjörk, Pekka Turunen, Eva Merz, Kristján Maack, Fin Serck-Hanssen, and Pia Arke. Though starkly varied in their approach, each of the photographers’ works attest to the Nordic protest against the trivialization of life. Also, they capture the sense of longing for the Nordic essence that exists midway between myth and reality.
