Leon Bakst (1866-1924) is recognized as one of the greatest artists in theatre in the 20th century. In 1916 during the first tour of the USA by Les Ballets Russes, Leon Bakst was at the height of his fame and popularity. His name was legendary as that of Diaghilev or Nijinsky. His importance for the development of stage design into an independent art form cannot be overstated, he transformed pictorial vision in the theatre from the rather mundane into a cockpit of fantasy and sensuality, multi-dimensional and brilliantly colourful.

Henrik Sjögren has followed theatrical developments in Sweden since 1950. From 1964 to 1972, he was a member of the National Council for Theatres and Music. Author of two books on Ingmar Bergman’s theatre work, he here presents a survey, which at the same time is a personal evaluation and a polemical challenge of events in Swedish theatre and Swedish society during the past 30 years.
